June 4th – – Cynthia Grostick

July 9th– – Tom Shehan
“Civil War Research-Part One”
In 1994, member Tom Shehan discovered a great-great grandfather, Thomas Moran from Pinckney. The records showed he had died of wounds received during the “War of the Rebellion”, or the American Civil War as we call it today. Always eager to learn about history, Tom started on three years of research to learn more about this ancestor who fought in two different units during the war, died of wounds received in battle, and is buried in what is now Arlington National Cemetery.  Learn how to find your ancestors service records using the National Archives and other sources, and then put a story together on what life in the service was like for a Civil War veteran.

August 6th– – Tom Shehan
“Civil War Research-Part Two”
Part Two will cover how to use the National Archives, Fold3, and other sources to get copies of your Civil War ancestors “Pension File”. It seems that things have not changed much in getting entitlements from the government in many cases. Widows, dependents and Civil War veterans often had many steps to take to get the pensions they were entitled to. However, this paper trail can be a trove of genealogical information on researching your ancestors.
